5 reasons you NEED to study abroad with your sisters!

We are thrilled to share this blog from our newest team member, Alexa. Alexa is an Alpha Delta Pi sister at Quinnipiac University as well as a stellar Select Select Study Abroad alum. She is spreading her Study Abroad cheer everywhere she goes and in this blog, she details just 5 of the reasons why she feels everyone should study abroad with their sisters. Enjoy!

Going abroad is something that every college student should do. When else in your life are you going to have the chance to live in another country for a long period of time, explore, eat great food, and learn all the unique features of another culture? Probably not anytime soon, and lets be honest we don’t want to do it when we retire…
The same thing can be said about being in a sorority! After you join your chapter it becomes comfortable and you never really feel the need to branch out and meet new people. But you have sisters all over the country! You never know who you could meet.
So why not make the best of both situations and go abroad…with your sisters?

Need more convincing?
We have 5 reasons why you need to!

1. The sisters that you will meet abroad are more like you than you think.
Your chapter doesn’t define what your organization stands for, and while your sisters all share the same values as you do, the women who join you abroad have even more in common with you. Spending so much time with your sisters abroad makes you close in a short amount of time. You really start to feel like some of these women are becoming your best friends. And even when the trip ends, it’s amazing to think that you now have friends all over the country.IMG_9224BW
2. Being able to call another country home is easier with your sisters.
Going abroad can seem scary so it’s nice to be with people who make you feel comfortable. No matter what organization you call home, you will always feel at home when you are traveling with your sisters.IMG_9481
3. You always get to throw what you know.
What is the point of amazing Instagrams without a bunch of sisters around you? Your #TBT’s will look great, and all of your sisters back in the US will wish they decided to come with you!IMG_9616
4. You always have a group to go out with.
If you want to explore and don’t want to go alone, you have a group of women who probably all want to go with you! From seeing amazing museums, to grabbing a glass of wine, there will always be someone to go with you.DSC01389
5. Your memories will last a lifetime.
Being abroad is an experience that stays with you forever. When you’re back in the US wishing you were eating a gelato in Florence, you can always text your sisters to reminisce and we bet that they will feel the same way.IMG_8394C

Guest Blogger: An Italian Scrapbook Masterpiece

We are accustomed to keeping business cards, tickets, napkins and every imaginable scrap from our travels. Some of our favorite finds we unearthed thanks to this extensive collection. But our efforts pale in comparison to those of our Guest Blogger, Jane’s. After spending the summer in Florence with Select Study Abroad, she put together what is nothing less than a work of art; a visual explosion of all the amazing memories from our summer together. Now, because we asked very very nicely, she has been so kind as to let us display this masterpiece. Below, see some of the amazing pages from her scrapbook with descriptions of the themes that inspired each one. Keep in mind that we are only seeing a small portion of what she made. It is a testament to an absolutely amazing summer that, thanks to her generosity, we can now enjoy as well! Thank you Jane!

Guest Blogger: Jane’s Ultimate Italian Watermelon Granita Recipe

A delicious Italian granita…read on to see how you can enjoy one at home!
Welcome our Guest Blogger, Jane!

Jane was a Select Study Abroad student this past summer and one of the most enthusiastic people we have every met. Before we arrived to a new city she had already picked three places she wanted to eat and had convinced several others to join her. No one was EVER disappointed with a Jane “selection.” She has excellent taste and is an avid researcher. At Select Study Abroad we feel similarly – NEVER waste a trip or a meal. There are too many amazing things and too little time to waste not doing (and eating!) the very best. So when her enthusiasm turned to a little something we call a granita well…she could not be stopped. Not even, apparently, when she returned home! Thanks to her unquenchable thirst for life and delicious icy watermelon she came up with this easily reproducible recipe you can use at home. Granita party anyone? I think we all owe her big time. Thank you Jane!!

As a kid, my dad would take me on gelato adventures before my ballet classes. I loved the delicate flavors and mouth-feel of the gelato – creamy, but not cloying. There was a little family run farm near my ballet studio in Natick, MA, and they made their own gelato from scratch. There were no glaring artificial colors, the labels were in Italian, and the stracciatella, or chocolate chip, had whole sheets of delectable chocolate tucked into the folds of vanilla. I collected the spoons, and a tower of plastic petaled dishes accumulated in the back of the pantry. When asked to choose between a true dedication to dance and my weekly habit, I promptly ended my dancing career. Continue reading…

Guest Blogger: Deb’s Fav Due Fratellini Panino (the love of her life)

Welcome our Guest Blogger, Deb!

Deb was a Select Study Abroad student and hands-down one of the most adventurous eaters I have ever met (and she has steep competition, ahem, Jane…). I loved that if we told her to try something she didn’t hesitate. It was after our very first day in Florence that she fell in love with a little panino (sandwich) shop and well…let’s just say it verged into the realm of obsession. We here at Select Study Abroad encourage that…especially when it comes to food in our favorite city. Going to Florence, Italy? You will want to know about this… Continue reading…
