Learn about the history of this UNESCO world heritage site from your directors, beginning with its ancient Roman foundations to its medieval connections to the port city of Genoa. Then hear about the floods that devastated the coastal region of in 2011 and the collective efforts to bring these beautiful coastal fishing villages back to life.
Walk down the famous “Via dell’amore” between the towns of Riomaggiore and Manarola to get a sight of the beautiful coastline. Then jump a train to the final stop of Monterosso where you can wander through the streets of the village to your hearts content, OR, get off a stop early and hike between Vernazza and Monterosso. Trek through the trails where your directors can show you first hand the terraced farming system of this region, and the spectacular views of the Italian Riviera.
Enter into one of the finest tasting spots in all of Cinque Terre. From the amazing pesto spreads shipped in from nearby Genoa to the delicious lemon concoctions (cookies, candies, and liqueurs) created from local citrus trees, take a tour of all these cities have to offer. For the more adventurous eaters, try some of the salted anchovies found only in Riomaggiore, a local delicacy, which has been prepared the same way for centuries.
Give your minds and legs a rest with an afternoon at the beach. Students will have a private lounge chair reserved at one of Monterosso’s finest beaches so that you can escape the heat Italian style.
